Mayan calendar and Global Meditations
The expression ‘Mayan Calendar’
The ‘Mayan Calendar’ is a vast subject in which the various counts/cycles interplay like wheels within wheels. It has mainly become a generic term for the 260 day sacred calendar called The Tzolkin which is the combination of 13 numbers and 20 day-signs (13 x 20 = 260). The Tzolkin is used in cosmology, ceremony, ‘astrology’, divination and shamanism.
Another general area is the end date of the Winter Solstice of 21 December 2012 which is part of the ‘Mayan Long Count’ of days. This date, which actually appears in a Maya prophecy text at Tortuguera, finishes the creation cycle started in 3114 BC. It is also the culmination of a longer cycle of 26,000 years, expressed in the galactic alignment of our sun with the dark rift of the Milky Way. Some even speak of 104,000 years which end 4 of these alignment cycles.
There are currently two main counts which convert our gregorian dates into the Tzolkin. One is the traditional count of days sometimes called the True Count or Quiché Maya count. The other one is part of a modern system recently introduced by Jose Argüelles called the Dreamspell and also linked to his 13 Moon calendar change peace movement. The Dreamspell which does not count leap days is said to correspond to our ‘galactic mission’ during this ‘end days’ period. However the common ground between the two counts is still the Tzolkin.
Balance and diversity
Regarding the unification for global meditation, I don’t think the solution is to consider one movement against the other - i.e. the traditionalists against the modern Dreamspell users - and to write off one or the other. Deciding who is right or who is wrong, in short, separation, is not needed. These are simply two different perspectives.
I am working to fully inform people interested in the subject, including newcomers and people familiar with the Dreamspell, about the traditional, shamanic point of view and teachings. Modern interpretations for the times we live in can still be included. On a practical note, I have developed a very simple double decoder on paper which can convert a date in both counts within a matter of a few seconds, so that the True Count is as easily accessible and hands-on as the modern count. Sheer justice as it is the genuine accurate maya count of days!
So I feel that for global meditation the solution is in balance, because diversity is important. Argüelles has been and still is a true catalyst with a lot of media coverage, impact and resonance in the modern world. As you may well know, he was ‘the main factor’ for the first global peace meditation on the Harmonic Convergence : 16 and 17 August 1987. Significantly, the traditional count of days is linked to the accurate classic Maya astronomers and mathematicians, to the ancestors, to the contemporary Maya communities and to various spiritual groups whose aim is to reactivate temples and sacred sites.
Choice of dates for global meditation
‘True count’
The date 8 Batz or 8 Chuen is traditionally the Tzolkin Sacred Calendar feast day and is an essential day for linking up with hundreds of fire ceremonies in Mayaland.
The regular marking of the Ahau days is also excellent and 13 Ahau in particular.
‘Dreamspell count’
13 Ahau / 1 Imix is also important for the renewal of the Tzolkin cycle in the Dreamspell count as well as 13 Oc / 1 Chuen = middle of this 260 day cycle.
In relation to the 13 Moon calendar :
25 July : the Day out of Time, day for peace, art and celebration.
26 July : start of the 13 Moon calendar.
Also good for smaller group gatherings are the ‘GAP days’ = the ‘Galactic Activation Portal’ days. They are part of the Maya loom or double helix DNA pattern in the Tzolkin.
The 12th day in each 13 day cycle is called a ‘Crystal day’; these are used by the Dreamspell groups to share and reflect on the 13 day cycle just gone and to formulate intentions for the next cycle.
Natural rhythms
The Solstices, Equinoxes and Lunations cycles are the most unifying times to meditate as these are cosmic markers. They do not depend upon counts, denominations or national boundaries and are therefore unifying. At these times the Tzolkin day signatures in both True Count and Dreamspell can be included as additional points of focus. Often profound insights will be experienced.

If you observe the calendar in both counts you will find that other days are important because of the links and the resonance that they have with each other. To quote but one example, the Harmonic Convergence day of 16 August 1987 is in the True Count 1 IMIX the first of the 260 days cycle. And these relationships occur frequently.
